For many Africa first-timers, the Serengeti, as viewed from the safety of a car window or roof hatch, probably lives up to all expectations. But, like all wilderness junkies, we felt we’d graduated from Safari 101. We craved something more adventurous and stimulating. It was time to see what else Africa had to offer. Time to stop the car and stretch our legs, to feel the earth underfoot and the sun on our backs, to pack Band-Aids and anti-inflammatories and experience the African wilderness unplugged, in 3D. Why not traipse the Bwindi rainforest in search of gorilla; snorkel the Okavango Delta and canoe the Zambezi River at the mercy of hippo and crocodile; get on our bellies with the beetles and lizards of the Namib Desert, then hike up Cape Town’s famous Table Mountain, bend down and smell the fynbos?
